In 1984, on a flight from Paris to London, the singer, actress Jane Birkin found herself sitting next to Hermès executive chairman Jean-Louis Dumas. She complained to Dumas that designer handbags were never big enough to carry all the things a young mum needs. Together they scribbled out a sketch of a holdall bag on the back of a sick bag.
